  • Katie Jennings

    N.O.R.A. INFANT AQUATICS
    MECHANICSVILLE, VA

Katie was born and raised in the Richmond area, where she now lives to her husband and 5 children.

As a former competitive swimmer, Katie was vigilant about keeping her children away from water. However, this didn’t stop a traumatic accident from happening to her second-born daughter, Nora. In the summer of 2020, at the age of 2, Nora made her way to a friend’s unoccupied, above-ground pool, which was not connected to the deck. It took paramedics 12 minutes of CPR to get Nora’s heartbeat back. She then spent the next 17 days at a local children’s hospital, 5 of which were on life support and in a medically induced coma. She ended up making a full recovery.

Since Nora’s accident, Katie learned about self-rescue swim lessons and pursued lessons for her children with Erin at Starfish Infant Aquatics. She certified with Erin to help make sure no family experiences what hers did, or worse. Katie frequently teaches lessons at Starfish Infant Aquatics.

  • Jessica Stigall

    MAKOS & MERMAIDS INFANT AQUATICS
    DINWIDDIE & HOPEWELL, VA

Jess is an Army wife and an Army veteran of 15 years with extensive experience in survival training and instruction. Throughout her military career, she developed a deep understanding of the importance of survival skills, and she has dedicated herself to teaching others how to stay safe in dangerous or difficult situations. During this time, I learned several fundamental concepts about aquatic survival that became the building blocks of my knowledge and interest in teaching this skill to children.

Jess and her husband are Virginia natives and have 6 children. They enjoy all activities water related, and it has been Jess’ passion to ensure that each of her children are aquatically skilled and capable of self-rescue. When her youngest daughter was born with mobility complications, she knew that I wanted her to have the same chance to enjoy the water. She began searching for programs that would be inclusive of her abilities. Jess came across an Infant Aquatics program in South Carolina, and she knew that this was the perfect fit for her. Despite her disability, Jess’ daughter was able to learn to self-rescue and enjoy the water with her friends and family. Jess was in awe of how her confidence in the water grew with each lesson. Watching her learn to maneuver though the water, where it had been so difficult for her on land, solidified Jess’ decision to become an Infant Aquatics Certified Instructor.

Jess assisted another IA instructor in South Carolina before moving back to Virginia. She found Erin with Starfish Infant Aquatics and decided it was time to make this dream a reality.

Jess is eager to bring awareness to the importance of aquatic safety and to provide a life-saving skill to all children in the Tri-Cities area.

One more paragraph here and that should be the ideal length for the bio.

  • Taylor Pohanka

    OTTERLY SAFE INFANT AQUATICS
    FREDERICKSBURG, VA

After having her daughter complete the swim-float-swim program and training with Erin Loewe in 2022, Taylor was excited to finally bring survival swim lessons to Fredericksburg. She was born and raised in Fredericksburg, where she currently lives with her family and two crazy labs. Taylor has a background in pediatric occupational therapy and home health occupational therapy.

With its easy access to many rivers, lakes, and pools in Fredericksburg, offering Infant Aquatics lessons in the area made so much sense. As a mother, Taylor understands the importance of providing children the safety skills and the confidence in the water. She’s excited to help her community by providing the Fredericksburg area through her company, Otterly Safe Infant Aquatics.

  • Kelly Mello

    BLUE RIDGE SWIM-FLOAT-SWIM
    CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA

As the mother of two active kids and a pool owner, Kelly knows the value of safeguarding little ones when it comes to the threat of drowning. However, since she could not find a survival swim instructor near her in 2016, she became a Certified Infant Aquatic Survival® Specialist after completing her training in Colorado with Judy Heumann, founder of Infant Aquatics. Since then, she’s taught hundreds of children in the Charlottesville area to become aquatic problem solvers.

The skills your child will learn through this aquatic survival program can and do save lives. It is the next best safeguard to effective supervision which should always be your priority around water.

Kelly is thrilled to be able to offer Infant Aquatics lessons in the Charlottesville area through her company, Blue Ridge Swim-Float-Swim.

  • Kristin Van Doren

    CHILD’S PLAY INFANT AQUATICS
    CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA

From childhood summers by the pool to beach adventures, Kristin’s had a lifelong connection to the water. Now, she’s a proud mom to three incredible kids, all under the age of 5. Becoming a parent made her realize that water skills aren't innate--they're learned.

Water safety has been a core concern for our family. We've consistently enrolled our children in various swim lessons, including "Mommy and Me" classes and group lessons. Over time, they became more at ease around water, but their actual swimming skills didn't see much improvement.

An eye-opening moment occurred at a pool party with my son's preschool class, highlighting how quickly things can go wrong around water. A realization hit home--waiting years for her kids to learn to swim wasn't an option. She needed swift progress, not gradual steps. She found Erin Loewe at Starfish Infant Aquatics® in Richmond. She committed to the 50 minute daily commute and in less than 6 weeks, her kids went from hesitant to confidently swimming and floating.

Conversations with Erin and Infant Aquatics founder Judy Heumann solidified her decision to learn how to teach these critical survival swim skills.

Through survival swim lessons, Kristin aims to empower both children and parents to create a community where water is fun, safe, and worry-free for everyone.
